Innsbruck
Innsbruck, set against the spectacular backdrop of the Alps, is not only a world-class European ski resort, but also the former seat of Maximilian I, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire.
This historical heritage characterises the old town with its fascinating rococo buildings, pastel-coloured façades and typical Tyrolean windows with floral decorations. The modern appearance of the Imperial Palace is thanks to Maria Theresa, a princess of the 18th century.
The Court Church houses the tomb of Maximilian I and the nearby Golden Roof, named after its gilded copper tiles, has frescoes depicting the life of the emperor.
During the approach to Innsbruck Airport, it becomes clear why the city is so popular. The majestic Alps can be seen from almost every street, green in summer and snow-white in winter. Ambras Castle, former seat of Archduke Ferdinand II, offers mountaineering, hiking and golfing in summer.
In winter, skiing and snowboarding against the impressive backdrop of Innsbruck attract visitors. Ski areas such as the Nordkette are easily accessible from the city's hotels and bed & breakfasts by cable car and chairlift. International competitions such as the Four Hills Tournament on the Bergisel ski jump take place here on the diverse pistes. Après-ski in Innsbruck is relaxed and informal in mountain hut-style bars and traditional restaurants.
