Trento city
Trento, or Trient, is a charming town near the Dolomites in the Adige river valley, surrounded by picturesque vineyards. The region is rich in history and culture, characterised by Alpine, Germanic and Mediterranean influences.
The town was probably founded in the 4th century BC by the Celts as Trent and was known as Tridentum under Roman rule. After turbulent times under various rulers, the region flourished under the rule of the prince-bishops. It later became part of Austrian South Tyrol and finally, after the First World War, part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Today, Trento is known for its high standard of living and its renowned university, which is one of the best in the country. The historic centre of the city offers a fascinating mix of cultures and eras. Visit the imposing Castello del Buonconsiglio on a rocky outcrop and the cathedral square with its impressive cathedral.
