Crossing the Alps

An unforgettable hiking adventure for spring and summer

Spring is just around the corner, and many hikers are looking for a new challenge. If you are a moderately experienced hiker and want to test your physical fitness over several days, then this Alpine crossing is just right for you! This tour takes you from the picturesque mountains around Munich to Italy, offering breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences.

Starting Point Tegernsee:
The Perfect Beginning The hike begins at the beautiful Tegernsee, which is easily accessible by public transport from Munich. Within an hour, you can get from Munich Central Station to Tegernsee. From here, you have the option to start the six- or seven-day route from two different starting points. Those who choose the longer option start in Gmund am Tegernsee and hike about 19 kilometers to the municipality of Kreuth in Upper Bavarian Miesbach. Alternatively, you can also take the bus to Kreuth to save yourself this first section.

Challenging Stages and Relaxing

Stage 1:
From Kreuth to Achensee From Wildbad Kreuth, the trail leads over the Blauberge mountains to Lake Achensee in Tyrol. This stage is the most physically demanding of the entire Alpine crossing. Over a distance of 17 kilometers, you will overcome 850 meters in altitude and enjoy a first view of the main Alpine ridge. Allow about six hours for this section.

Stage 2:
Relaxation at Lake Achensee The second stage from Achenkirch to Maurach am Achensee is significantly more relaxed. Here you have the opportunity to swim in the refreshing waters of Tyrol's largest lake. The route is 13.5 kilometers long and can be completed in about four hours, with only 200 meters of altitude to overcome.

Stage 3:
Dreamlike Views in the Central Alps On the third stage, you hike from Maurach to Hochfügen. This 13-kilometer route takes you to 2,000 meters above sea level and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape with Swiss stone pines and alpine roses. You should plan about four hours for this hike and overcome 450 meters in altitude.

Stage 4:
Historic Alpine Villages in the Zillertal Valley The fourth stage takes you from Hochfügen to Mayrhofen. The path winds high above the Zillertal Valley, passing historic alpine villages, glacial moraines, and ice-age lakes. This 11-kilometer route requires about five hours and includes 900 meters of altitude.

Stage 5:
Across the Main Alpine Ridge On the penultimate stage, you cross the main Alpine ridge from Mayrhofen to Pfitsch. This 13-kilometer route leads you along the Schlegeis Reservoir and offers impressive waterfalls. Allow four and a half hours for this stage, during which you will overcome 500 meters in altitude.

Stage 6:
Arrival in Sterzing after around 86 kilometers of walking, the last stage still has a distance of 20 kilometers ahead of you. Through the Pfitsch Valley, you hike past rustic mountain farms and villages to the Alpine town of Sterzing, which is called Vipiteno in Italian. After five and a half hours and 150 meters of altitude, you can celebrate your successful Alpine crossing here.

If you wish, you can take a trip to the city of Bolzano after the hike – either on foot or by train. From there, you can comfortably return to Tegernsee or Munich with Clever Transfer.
